5 Questions With the Co-owners of Houston's Newest Men's Store Stag Provisions

We had the pleasure of interviewing the co-owners of Stag Provisions, Don Weir and Steve Shuck. Read about their new Houston Store, What men should be buying right now, and what makes them uniques from other local stores.

Do you pick your clothing selection based on the demographics of the location or is it the same selection in all stores?
As we look at potential locations, we look for markets and areas within those markets that already have an appreciation for what we do - clean, classic American style. And then once we start stocking the stores, we definitely take the make up of the neighborhood and customer base into account. As many of these stores are so new, Houston being the newest, we’re learning a lot about the personality of each store and what the customers want. While much of the assortment will be the same from store to store, there will be many unique differences as well.

What makes your store stand out from other boutiques like concepts here in Houston?
We think we approach our business differently from comparable boutiques in two ways - how we stock the store and how we staff it. From a stock standpoint, we aspire to have a little something for everyone, rather than several things for only one type of customer. This means that we offer products at multiple price points, we have a diverse assortment of styles to serve a wide range of guys, and we bring in non-apparel merchandise to cater to other aspects of his life - books, furniture, art. With our staff, we aren’t always looking for people with sales experience, but for people who are naturally friendly and approachable, and who have a passion for what we do. We find that focusing on people with positive attitudes who genuinely enjoy helping folks makes us stand out a bit from the crowd.

What inspired you to go with a men’s store vs a woman's store?
When we started STAG in Austin five plus years ago, the idea to open a men’s clothing and lifestyle store sprang from what we perceived to be a gap in the market for classic men’s clothing with an American point of view. We had difficulty finding clothes for men that were well made and weren’t so heavily dictated by trends and tricks. We wanted to sell clothes that would hang in a guy’s closet for years to come, and we’ve continued to grow the business with that same mission in mind.

What are some items guys should be buying right now?
Every guys needs the same essentials for summer - a pair or two of twill shorts he can live in day to day (maybe throw in a pair with a pattern to mix things up), some short sleeve woven shirts to get him through the hottest months comfortably (one of our favorites is a chambray shirt with a subtle pin-up girl motif on it), some t-shirts in an assortment of solids and stripes, a great pair of classic board shorts for the pool or beach, and, of course, a pair of high quality sunglasses to top it off.

Describe your customer?
We cater to all kinds of customers with a really wide demographic base. We get the full spectrum, which includes guys who are really into menswear and read magazines and follow blogs to guys who just need some pants that fit them well. What they all have in common is that they care about personal style over fashion and are more interested in quality over trends.

Are there any new labels that you guys are excited to introduce to the Houston market?
Yeah, there are labels both new and old that we’re really excited to bring to the Houston market. One of the big ones is Ralph Lauren’s Double RL line — a line that we’ve carried since we opened STAG Austin in 2009 and that only a handful of stores carry worldwide. We also carry Alex Mill, Faherty, Save Khaki, Imogene + Willie, Saturdays NYC, Rogue Territory, Houston’s Hamilton Shirts, Gitman Vintage, Garrett Leight, Moscot and many other smaller brands that have limited distribution
