It seems every generation has a generation killer. Much like the glamorized use of cocaine in the 70’s, codeine is widely used and glamorized in today’s society. Young people all over the country are openly using this dangerous narcotic and it seems like there is no stopping it. Rappers like Drake, Lil Wayne, Three 6 Mafia and many others speak highly of their love for the “Double Cup”, but why are these guys promoting such a drug?
Codeine, the primary ingredient, is a very addictive drug. It’s an opiate, so that means it’s on the same level as heroine. It has sedative properties and it is a depressant of your central nervous system (CNS) which is responsible for your breathing. It can lead to seizures and even death. If you are caught with it, it can come with a hefty jail stint. Houston native and professional NFL player Johnny Jolly was facing 20 years for allegedly being caught with the drug multiple times
“Drank” has been around since the early 90’s and was made popular by Houston legend DJ Screw. He made music that was slow and laid back. His beats were inspired by his use of codeine. It made him feel like he was listening to music in slow motion and it has been prevalent in the Houston. Houston even has a nick name called the city of the purple sprite. DJ Screw succumbed to his addiction of “lean” by overdosing in early 2000. Pimp C from UGK met a similar fate when he died from the deadly cocktail in 2007. Lil Wayne made headlines in 2012, when he had multiple seizures due to his excessive use of drank.
High school and college-aged students are more likely to try it because their favorite rapper glorifies the use of this drug. Social media also helps its popularity with images on rappers Instagram pages. In an effort to curb obtaining the popular drug, the pharmaceutical company Activas has closed production on their Codeine and Promethazine cough syrup. Although this will not eliminate the use of this drug, it’s a start.
