Restaurant Openings Cheat Sheet

Houston has been on a roll, and has no intention of slowing down.

Houston is finally being recognized as one of the foremost culinary capitals in the country. Celebrated chefs are bringing their talents and exciting concepts to Htx. In the upcoming months, expect to see local restaurateurs expand with new outlets and some extraordinary cuisine in the Bayou City.

New restaurants to try this month

If you enjoy the original Oporto on Richmond Avenue for a meal or wine break, you’ll be happy to know that husband-and-wife owners Rick and Shiva Di Virgilio recently opened a larger and more ambitious spot in Midtown. The menu features many Portuguese specialties – e.g. house-cured grilled sardines, chouriço almondegas (smoked pork meatballs flavored with tomato and saffron) and a gratin of salted cod – as well as cheese and charcuterie selections. As we go to press, the restaurant is open for dinner only; lunch will begin in February. The space was designed by Michael Hsu of Austin, who also did Uchi and the late Sushi Raku on Elgin.

North Italia

The Arizona parent company of True Food Kitchen is brings its Italian concept to Uptown Park. North Italia specializes in handcrafted pastas and pizzas made from scratch daily. Opened March 3, 2015

Weights + Measures

A neighborhood restaurant, bakery and bar located in a 1950s industrial warehouse in Midtown. Open every day from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m offering a little bit of everything for breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunch. The menu includes pizzas, pastas, sandwiches, tapas, pastries on-the-go, coffee, Specialty breads and much more.

Tout Suite

Whatever the reason for your visit – coffee, a quick lunch, to-go pastries or a midday juice – Eado’s new cafe, bakery and coffeehouse Tout Suite will serve it up “right away.” The sister concept to Sweet bakery in CityCentre opened in September and has been filling a much-needed cafe/bakery void in Houston’s Eado (“east of downtown”) area. Owners Anne Le and Sandy Tran have transformed the warehouse at 2001 Commerce that once housed a dodgy nightclub into an expansive, multi-level cafe with a chic industrial atmosphere. Recommended: the 44 Farms flank steak sandwich with caramelized onions, provolone and a house garlic aioli on a pretzel hoagie.

Beaucoup Bar & Grill Beaucoup Bar & Grill

"Expanding outside the Medical Center, the home of the 24 inch po'boy and the city's best crawfish bread opened a second outpost last month. Bigger digs but the same great Creole offerings of jambalayas and pastas. For a restaurant specializing in po'boys, the black bean burger is surprisingly as tasty and filling as its Creole counterparts. " -Jakeisha Wilmore
