You may be suffering the winter blues and not even know it. I’ve questioned myself a couple of times about our gloomy and rainy weather. With constant cloudy days, our natural body clock can go haywire, causing depression-like symptoms that we wouldn’t normally have. We officially have 15 days left of winter.
So in these last few days, here are some ideas on combating those gloomy and rainy days:
Color – Adding color to your surroundings or opting to wear bright colors can lift those gloomy moods. Start wearing your spring clothes now. If you don’t have the budget for major color renovations to your home, opt to change the furniture around. Change out your sheets; buy new curtains, anything that will give your place an immediate change.
Get outside! - Of course, if the weather permits, but for us Houstonians, the weather hasn’t been that bad. We are fortunate we do not reside in the areas subject to the polar vortex, so take advantage. A light brisk walk around your neighborhood can boost your mood and give you a burst of energy. Working out is always recommended to boost those feel-good endorphins.
Get social the old fashioned way! Meet up with friends, volunteer, or meet the neighbors. The key is to get out of your head and be social. Being alone while depressed may worsen your condition. Helping others by volunteering is a great way to gain perspective on life and it also makes you happy knowing you are doing things for others.
Get off social media- Yes, it is tempting to inquire about every person who liked your crushes post, but that is a time and energy drainer. Social media is somewhat of a black hole, once you are sucked in, it’s impossible to find your way out. You start to compare your life to everyone that you see on Facebook and that can get you down. It’s best to give all social apps a break when you are feeling blue, and go out and socialize with real people!
