What is Labor Day?
Labor Day is an annual workers' holiday on the first Monday in September. The first Labor Day was organized by the Central Labor Union of New York in 1882.
Unlike most holidays, Labor Day isn’t weighed down by a batch of traditions. It’s a glorious and much needed extra day off to do your own way. Before you bid summer adieu, go out with a bang on Labor Day. Check out our roundup of the best things to do in Houston over the Labor Day weekend.
Dancin' in the Street... Motown & More Revue
The thrill on the hill, Dancin’ in the Street… Motown & More revue is back for a soul filled Labor Day weekend at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Dancin’ in the Street covers the timeless classics of legendary Motown artists and many more soul music greats.
This is a ticketed event for the covered seating area. Free tickets are available (4 per person over age 16 while they last) at the Miller Outdoor Theatre box office the day of the performance between the hours of 10:30am-1pm. If tickets remain at 1pm, the box office will re-open one hour before show time to distribute the remaining tickets. As always, open seating on the hill.

Amazing Houston Comic Con at the George R. Brown Convention Center
Thousands of comic book fans will descend upon Houston Labor Day weekend for the second annual Amazing Houston Comic Convention. This event will bring the creators behind some of Hollywood’s biggest films to downtown Houston, including Rob Liefeld – creator of DEADPOOL, the most popular character in the Marvel Universe.
The convention will take place at George R. Brown Convention Center Sept. 4-6, and will feature a show floor packed with more than 100 exhibitors, an exciting artist alley with more than 200 artists, and autograph sessions, which will give fans access to some of their favorite comic book creators.
Weekend passes are $60
Saturday passes are $35
Friday- or Sunday-only passes are $25

Labor Day Weekend at Waterway Square in The Woodlands
Enjoy live music, strolling entertainment, face painting, an interactive graffiti art creation by Houston’s Aerosol Warfare, acrobatic and circus performances from Cirque La Vie and more family fun capped off by fireworks at 8:55pm. Picnic dinners encouraged.
Event runs from 6pm to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday.
