Live Oak Lounge and Grill is the newest addition to the Historic Third Ward. Revisioned from the old Sugar Hill, Live Oak is a hybrid lounge and sports bar with both hookahs, televisions, and music for your entertainment.
Live Oak plays an ode to its name with the different types of woodwork, both natural and man-made along the walls that get your attention, while the 8 flat screens right above the diner style sections keep your attention. Live Oak takes that “Houston humility” and turns wallflowers into the centerpieces in this combination of design and entertainment. The front walls are garage style doors that lead out to the new patio that gives an “inside-outside” vibe.
Live Oak caters to the young clientele in the mix of the city. Friday nights can pack up nicely but Saturdays are “Packed Out” including bottle service, some of 93.7 and 97.9’s best DJs and Houston’s prettiest faces. Whether TSU or U of H, the college crowd loves the $1 Taco Tuesdays and Wednesday Burger and Beer Night. Tuesday thru Friday you can catch the happy hour from 5p-9p with $6 Premiums, $5 -Calls -Frozen Margaritas and Hurricanes, $4 Wines and Imports, and $3 Domestics. Be sure to try the house favorite Aquaman; a melon pineapple Hennessey cocktail that packs a punch.
What To Order: the boudin balls, wing pops, and the smoked collard green eggrolls. The wing pops are a great idea! Meatier than wings, the drumstick makes for a good change of pace from ordinary bar food. The lemon pepper wing pops are good but the Henny BBQ wings are memorable; tangy BBQ sauce with a subtle underlying aftertaste of Henny. The boudin balls are delicious as expected. Oftentimes boudin can get pretty spicy, but these balls spice creeps up on you without making the experience unpleasant. The collard green eggrolls are nice, they reminded me of spinach artichoke dip, and complement the spice of the boudin well. This assortment of bar food is far from average, the devil is in the details and Live Oak sets the bar high for other bars.
Next time you’re going out and end up in Third Ward, make sure to stop by this new fixture in the Houston scene, you won’t be disappointed.
